A clock or watch with numbers (digits) only is called a digital clock. Some digital clocks use 24-hour times. For example 7 o'clock p.m. is shown as 19.00 (19 hours after midnight).

12 o'clock at night. On a digital clock it may be shown as 00.00.

Our modern analogue clock is based on a sundial. The sundial could only show the time during the day. Most people didn't do very much outside these times so 12 hours was all that was needed.

Modern forms of transport like trains and aeroplanes travel throughout a 24 hour day. 24-hour times are used to make sure that people know that a train of plane is leaving or arriving a.m. or p.m.
